 Cervical smears
As Requested

A smear test is a simple and usually painless examination to check the health of a woman’s cervix (the entrance to the womb). We recommend every woman who is or has been sexually active have regular smears. Here is the National screening programme (find out more):

Age 25: 1st invitation for a smear
Age 25-49:  every 3 years
Age 50-64:  every 5 years
Age 65 plus: Only those who have not been screened since age 50 or have had abnormal test results.

The test only takes a few minutes, and it could be a life saver. By detecting pre-cancerous cells, a smear test can cut the risk of cancer by up to 91%. If you are anxious or embarrassed about the personal nature of this procedure we can help you to overcome this. We also offer a chaperone service should you need it.

We use a computerised system that will automatically remind you when your smear is due. When you receive this, please make an appointment with the GP or practise nurse of your choice. The Health Authority will notify you of your smear result.

To find out more about having a cervical smear, please see your GP or contact our reception.
